Hope Amid the Floodwaters

In a matter of minutes, entire communities along Nepal’s northern border were swept away.

On August 26, a catastrophic flash flood tore through the Himalayan region along the Nepal-Tibet border, sending a devastating surge of water, mud, and debris through villages and towns below.

More than 1,000 people have died. Thousands remain missing. And countless families have lost homes, livelihoods and loved ones.

In some of the hardest-hit areas of Nepal, roads and bridges have been destroyed, power lines are down and communication remains extremely limited. Response teams are still struggling to reach remote communities cut off by the disaster.

But in the midst of unimaginable loss, the Church, in partnership with Eurasia global workers, is responding.

Urgent Needs for Flood-Affected Families

Assemblies of God churches in Nepal are helping provide shelter, food, and basic necessities to hundreds of displaced people.

We are in communication with our Eurasia workers serving in the affected area and continue to receive updates about the immediate needs on the ground.

“In the weeks following the disaster, around 200 people are being sheltered in one Assemblies of God church on the edge of the affected area,” a Eurasia worker recently reported. Hundreds more are staying in schools and other community shelters.

But many villages have not been reached yet due to the destruction of roads and bridges, as well as continuing monsoon rains, making the roads inaccessible.

Homes and shops have simply disappeared. Families who escaped the flood are now facing the difficult reality of rebuilding their lives with very little.

Friend, will you help provide gospel-focused aid to people in crisis in Nepal today?

The needs are immediate and tangible.

  • $60 provides a mini solar kit for a home or shelter without electricity, giving families light and the ability to charge phones and stay connected.
  • $150 provides a kitchen kit for a displaced family, including basic cookware, dishes, utensils, and a gas cooking system, so they can begin preparing their own meals as they move into temporary housing.
  • $25 provides emergency food supplies for those who have lost access to regular meals, giving nourishment during the first days of displacement.
  • $40 provides hygiene and baby supplies for families who have lost access to basic personal-care items, diapers, and other necessities.

Your gift can also fund other urgently needed crisis-aid resources, including safe drinking water and purification supplies, tarps and blankets, medical supplies, clothing, solar lights, and cleanup tools.

COMPASSION OPENS DOORS

In the days ahead, the needs will continue to change. Rescue will give way to aid. Aid will become rebuilding. Families who have lost everything will begin the long process of starting over.

Throughout the years the Assemblies of God have shared the gospel in Nepal, we have witnessed many disasters strike the country’s rugged mountains and the amazing people who call them home. In every instance when God’s people have stepped into these tragic circumstances to show His love to desperate people, there has been a transformation in how those assisted perceive the message of the gospel and the followers of Christ who proclaim it. As we begin to feed and shelter those who have lost everything in the terrifying floods in the highest mountains of Nepal, we can be sure that the love of God being shown will open doors and open hearts to the complete presentation of just how much God loves every one of them.” – Southern Asia Area Director, Eurasia

And you can make it possible for the Church to meet urgent needs and share the hope of Christ… all along the way.

When believers open their doors to those who have lost homes, provide meals to grieving families, or place needed supplies into the hands of survivors, people experience the compassion of Jesus in a tangible way.

We believe these acts of compassion can pave the way for gospel conversations—for people to ask why the Church showed up, why Christians cared, and where this hope comes from.

That is why I’m asking you to give today.

Your gift to Nepal Flood Relief will help equip the local Church to continue serving communities devastated by this disaster.

Whether you provide a $60 solar kit, a $150 kitchen kit, emergency food, or hygiene supplies, your generosity can help meet urgent needs of those affected by this disaster with practical relief and the hope of Christ.

Please also pray for those who are grieving, for the thousands who remain missing, for rescue and relief workers, and for local churches serving their neighbors in the days ahead.

Thank you for standing with the people of Nepal in what may be one of the worst disasters they’ve ever faced.

P.S. The need in Nepal is urgent. Please give today to help the Church provide gospel-focused aid and share the compassion of Christ with families affected by this devastating disaster.
